Head southwest from downtown Kuala Lumpur and you'll find Petaling Jaya in Selangor, where a district known as Sunway City emerges. It's less a city than a town designed entirely by a single company. A university, hospital, hotel, water park, and shopping mall are connected by walkways, with Sunway Pyramid sitting at the heart of it all. Before you even step out of the taxi, you know what it is. Through the car window stands an enormous sandstone lion's head, its jaw forming the vehicle drop-off lane. Even outside the Christmas season, star-shaped decorations hung across the road above.

The Pyramid Entrance Beside the Lion

While the lion statue is famous, the actual pedestrian entrance is through the pyramid beside it. Above the glass doors, stone reliefs of a sphinx and pyramid are carved, with "SUNWAY PYRAMID" spelled out in gold lettering. The ceiling inside is painted in orange and red pixel patterns, so the moment you pass through the doors, even the lighting color changes. I expected this Egyptian theme to be poorly executed and cheesy, but the column heights and open ceiling created such an overwhelming scale that it transcended tackiness. Even in daytime, the interior always looks like dusk thanks to the yellow lighting.

Inside, Your Sense of Direction Disappears

The most common mistake first-time visitors make is thinking, "Let's just take a walk around." I lost two hours doing that on my first visit. The mall divides into two major zones (the pyramid side and the orange atrium side), and the passages are staggered across floors, so to relocate a store you saw on the first floor, you inevitably end up going up and down the wrong floors twice. Here's one practical tip: Set a destination and remember it by floor number. Think of it like "3rd floor sports area" or "LG floor food court."

Below the central stairs, Paris Baguette occupies a large island of its own. The familiar sign from Korea is there in blue neon, and the seating area is much larger than Korean locations. Michael Kors, ZARA, and adidas occupy the upper floor around it, so when your feet get sore from shopping, you naturally flow here. I sat down in the afternoon for coffee, and while the bread selection is nearly identical to Korean stores, prices are in ringgit, so it's hard to gauge. Best to check when you pay.

The real attraction of this mall, though, is the indoor ice rink, Sunway Pyramid Ice. In the middle of a shopping mall near the equator sits a rink that approaches regulation size, and from the upper-level railings, you can see all the children skating below. There were about twenty people in the afternoon session, so it wasn't crowded, and the air around the rink was noticeably cool—wearing just a t-shirt, I got a bit chilly standing around. It's the spot with the greatest temperature difference in the mall. Even if you don't skate, it's fun just watching from the railings.

BRT and Shuttle — How Not to Walk in This Area

What sets this place decisively apart from other large malls is the dedicated elevated BRT highway attached to it. Like Bangkok's BTS, it runs elevated, but what passes isn't a subway—it's a rapidKL bus in its distinctive livery. When I first saw it, I was struck by how an entire lane was dedicated exclusively to buses. The stations are numbered starting from SB1 (Sunway-Setia Jaya), with large green directional signs, so there's no confusion. Frequency is high enough that I never remember waiting more than five minutes.

From the BRT stations, covered overpasses connect to the mall, hotels, and water park. This is the real advantage of this area. When temperatures exceed 32 degrees and afternoon squalls pour down, you can move around without an umbrella. Head down toward the SB3 station and the escalator exits directly to the Sunway Lagoon Surf Beach entrance, with directional signs pointing to the lagoon, resort hotel, convention center, and pyramid hotel. Beyond that, shuttle vehicles circulate through the complex, so if you have luggage or are traveling with children, you don't have to walk.

A Water Park and Zoo Attached to the Side of the Mall

It might sound strange to jump from talking about the mall to a water park, but that's really how it is. From the elevated area behind the mall looking down, Sunway Lagoon sprawls out completely. Wave pools, artificial surf facilities, large red and yellow funnel-shaped slides, and zip-line wires crossing overhead—it's all visible at once. Within the theme park area sits a wildlife park as well, so many families do water play and animal viewing in a single day. The white building visible in the back of the photo is Sunway University. You won't find a landscape elsewhere where a university campus and water park are separated by just a fence.

From another angle, the layout of the complex becomes even clearer. The "SUNWAY LAGOON" sign sits among tropical greenery, behind it a row of apricot-colored domed resort buildings and high-rise towers bearing the SUNWAY logo. You can even see the zip-line wires crossing above the forest. It looks impressive in photos, but honestly, this isn't a great area for walking. Everything between facilities is cut off by roads, so without overpasses and shuttles, getting around is quite difficult.

Resort Hotel Lobby, and Evening

The Sunway Resort Hotel attached to the mall has a distinctive look: apricot-colored walls topped with a turquoise roof. A large mushroom-shaped canopy covers the vehicle drop-off, with bougainvillea planted in the planter in front. It connects to the mall via an indoor passage, so you can enter without getting wet on rainy days. From outside it looks like 90s-era design, but stepping into the lobby gives a different impression.

One side of the lobby is entirely Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill. Beneath gold-leaf ceiling medallions hang two large crystal chandeliers in succession, their light reflecting off the marble floor. Black and white photographs of Ramsay himself hang on the inner wall. Even before dinner service, more than half the tables were occupied. I went without a reservation that day and was offered a wait, but ultimately gave up and went back to the mall for dinner elsewhere. If you're planning to eat here, making a reservation ahead is essential. The price point isn't meant to be compared with local neighborhood restaurants, so it's best to budget separately (menus and prices should be checked on-site).

Summary and Remaining Notes

• If you're driving, the drop-off zone under the lion's head is most convenient. For public transit, use the BRT lines SB1 through SB3 and choose your exit based on your destination.
• Remember routes by floor number. Since the mall splits into two zones, remembering "left/right" will definitely get you lost.
• Bring a light layer. The mall's air conditioning is strong, but it's noticeably colder around the ice rink.
• To do both water park and mall in one day, finish water activities in the morning and move to the mall in the afternoon. The reverse leaves you shopping with wet luggage.
• Operating hours, admission fees, and reservation policies change seasonally, so check on-site or official channels before your visit.

Ultimately, this area's character boils down to one thing: it's not a place to visit just for one mall, but rather the entire complex tied together by overpasses and shuttles—mall, hotel, water park, zoo, and university—that is the destination. If you only allow half a day, you'll just take a photo of the lion statue and leave. A minimum of one full day, or two days if you have children, is the right amount of time.
