Drive up a mountain road for just over an hour from Kuala Lumpur, and there's an entire city sitting on top of a ridge. Genting Highlands in Pahang State, Malaysia. The outdoor theme park at its peak is Genting SkyWorlds. Clouds drift past the rides, and on some mornings, the roller coaster rails disappear into the mist. Literally a theme park built in the sky.

This time I departed from Kuala Lumpur by car at 7am. Without exaggeration, I think this is the most practical information in this entire article. Genting is a national tourist destination where Malaysians flock on weekends, so arriving even a bit late means simultaneous traffic on the mountain road, parking lot queues, and cable car lines. Leaving at 7am, I arrived at the foot of the mountain just after 8am, and the cable car boarding area had its entire queue line completely empty.

7am Departure — Toll Gates and Mountain Roads

After exiting KL's city center, the first thing you encounter is the toll gate. It was that time before sunrise, when the sky was brightening hazily. Above the lanes, signs for MyRFID and SmartTAG are divided, and if you're using a rental car, it's good to check which one is installed beforehand and pick your lane accordingly. You want to avoid the situation of hearing honking from behind while reversing.

Past the toll gate, the road becomes seriously uphill. On the left is a cliff-like grove of tree ferns, and in sections where the view opens to the right, you start to see a few spiky buildings in the distance on the ridge. That's Genting. When I first saw it, there was a feeling of "why is that there?" that lasted quite a while. The curves continue endlessly, so if anyone in the backseat gets carsick easily, it's better to give them medicine beforehand. I was careless once and watched my companion turn pale.

Parking — From B2 to B7, Go Down Based on the Numbers

For drivers heading to Genting, the first hurdle is the underground parking garage. Upon entering, there's an electronic sign displaying available parking spaces per level in red LED. On the day I visited, there were 342 spaces in B2, 471 in B3, 443 in B4, 412 in B5, 382 in B6, and 491 in B7. This was at 8am. I remember days when I came in the afternoon and the upper levels were near zero, so just looking at these numbers on the sign told me "we came early."

When you come up to ground level from parking, the air temperature is completely different. While KL's city center is humid and oppressive with temperatures around 32 degrees from morning, here a single sleeveless shirt makes your arms break out in goosebumps. I'd strongly recommend bringing one light jacket. Beyond the parking garage's front lawn, you can see a tower-shaped hotel with a pointy orange roof and high-rise construction cranes. Genting is a place that keeps building.

To orient yourself: Genting is located northeast of KL's city center, over one mountain. Whether you come by personal vehicle, taxi, Grab, or bus, you eventually either switch to a cable car at the Awana station at the foot of the mountain, or continue up the winding mountain road to the peak by car. I chose the cable car. The map below shows the location where I took photos this time.

Awana Skyway — The Luxury of No Line

The moment I entered the cable car boarding area was the highlight of the day. There was a queue line made with red belts that must have been at least ten layers deep, and there was not a single person inside it. This maze of belts is evidence of how many people swarm in during peak season. If I'd come in the afternoon, I would have had to walk through all of it. Large ceiling fans were spinning, and red cabin gondolas were slowly moving in along the rails from inside.

When you board the cabin and the door closes, the ground immediately disappears beneath your feet. You glide over the tropical rainforest on the mountainside, and the wet earthy smell of the rainforest drifts through the window gaps. Below, the road that winds around the mountain looks like a real snake, and numbered cabins come down one after another from the opposite direction. When I passed by, I encountered cabin number 69.

As you go up a bit more, the view opens up dramatically. When cabin 09 passes by, the entire Genting cityscape spreads out below you. Completed apartments, steel frames still attached with cranes, and red-roofed hotels all mixed together, yet somehow it feels strange that all of this is sitting on top of a mountain ridge.

Midway up the mountain, your line of sight becomes exactly level with the clouds. Between those ridges below, there's a temple building with an orange tile roof perched, which is the Chin Swee Caves Temple, located mid-cable car route. Depending on your ticket type, you can get off here once, but I just passed by this time. Ticket types and prices change by season, so I recommend checking at the on-site ticket office or the official app — it's better not to write down prices I remember if there's a chance they're wrong.

As we approached the peak, the opposite phenomenon happened. Below was clear but above was in clouds. White masses would flow past the window entirely, making buildings disappear and reappear. The glass reflection made the photos hazy, but that mist is the reality behind the phrase "a theme park in the sky."

Genting SkyWorlds — An Outdoor Theme Park Where Clouds Pass By

SkyWorlds' structure is best understood from above. There's a snow-covered pointed peak set in the center, and in front of it, a ride track carved into red sandstone canyon winds like a snake. To the right, a fluorescent green coaster rail crosses the sky, and below it is a section lined with pastel-colored buildings. It's an amusement park squeezed directly into a mountain peak terrain, so the walking sensation is different from a flat theme park. You keep encountering uphill and downhill stretches.

In the morning, there are barely any people. The number of people standing in the plaza in the photo can be counted on one hand. This state continues roughly through mid-morning. After noon, the plaza fills with people, and wait times appear for popular rides. This is where you reap the reward of that 7am departure.

The scale becomes more tangible when viewed horizontally. From the snow mountain set at the left end to the pastel building section on the right, connected across the top by the green coaster rail spanning the entire park. Behind it, the real mountain ridge and clouds form the backdrop. This unusual combination of an artificial fake mountain and a real mountain in one frame is what makes this park unique.

Each zone has a distinct theme. The area with gray concrete walls and an orange loop coaster is the Invasion: Planet of the Apes zone, and next to it stands a yellow steel drop tower. Below are pastel-colored spinning rides clustered together, making it a good place for families with children to spend time. The first floor of a brick building has restaurants and cafes attached, making it easy to sit and rest between rides.

Cable cars continue passing over the park. When you lift your head while on a ride, you see red cabins moving in a line overhead. To the right, there's a hemispherical air dome with blue and yellow stripes, with a residential building attached behind it. The park, hotel, and cable car are physically connected, so the flow of movement is short.

There's Another Amusement Park Inside the Building — Skytropolis

This is the part first-time visitors to Genting most often miss. Many people see only the outdoor SkyWorlds and leave, but there's an entire indoor theme park inside the building. It's called Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park (with 天城室内乐园 written in Chinese on the ceiling). As you ride down the escalator, you can see a giant Ferris wheel standing entirely in the lower level, and at first, it's hard to believe such a thing fits indoors.

The cylindrical LED surrounding the plaza keeps changing advertisements. When I visited, the '2026 Lucky Wednesday' promotion and a car prize screen were running, and on another pillar, text reading Eden, The Garden of… scrolled by. Swensen's is attached to the lower level, and a banner reading Gohtong Way — STREET FOOD | MUSIC | ENTERTAINMENT hung along the corridor (marked as free entry).

Inside, the entire ceiling is an LED screen. When you look up, you see gear tooth patterns flowing, and below that, red steel structures and neon pillars are set up in a steampunk feel. It's indoors but quite noisy. Ride motor sounds, game booth sound effects, and ceiling speaker music all reflect at once, so you need to raise your voice to talk. If a child is sensitive to sound, it's good to be prepared before entering.

Going deeper inside, you encounter an Eiffel Tower-shaped structure wrapped in blue lighting. At the top is a Loop de Loop sign, and next to it Spin Crazy is spinning. However, to be honest, during the time I was there, some rides were covered with blue cloth and not operating. Indoor parks sometimes have some rides stopped for maintenance or time-related reasons. If you came for a specific ride, it's better to check if it's running at the entrance first.

Besides rides, there are quite a few game booths. Booths like Lobster Pot ball-tossing games have walls filled with plush toys, with conditions like 'GET 2 TO WIN' attached. If you bring kids, your wallet opens here. I threw twice and cleanly failed.

When night falls, the impression of the same space changes completely. The lighting becomes purple and deep purple, and as the corridor empties, the daytime noise disappears. Passing in front of the dim sum restaurant Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐), when you go deeper inside, you encounter a large cat face-shaped archway. The sign reads CAT ALLEY. I didn't notice it when passing during the day, but seeing it at night, this side was much more impressive.

Food Talk — There Are Really Many Restaurants

At Genting, you don't need to worry about going hungry. Chinese cuisine, dim sum, ice cream, fast food, and street food sections are all solved in one building. The problem is rather choosing what to eat. That day I settled at a dim sum restaurant.

What caught my eye most was the xiaolongbao that came in eight colors. Green, black, gray, red, orange, yellow with basic white, each color appears once on a plate. The taste differs slightly by color, with soy sauce and chili sauce on the side plus red chili sauce separately. The soup inside is hot, so it's safe to place it on a spoon and burst it once before eating. I rashly popped one in whole and burned the roof of my mouth.

What I ordered alongside was wonton tossed noodles. Fine noodles topped with fried garlic, chili, and scallions tossed in a soy-based sauce, a style where the fried garlic aroma is strong and could be hit or miss. I chose it because of this garlic flavor.

The wonton in red chili oil (hong you chao shou) that I ordered separately came submerged in red oil, but it wasn't as spicy as it looked. The nutty aroma comes before the heat.

The fish-fragrant eggplant stir-fry arrives in a wok. It comes thick and braised with ground meat, perfect for ordering an extra bowl of rice. Scallions on top provide the final aroma.

For finishing, what came out were three fried cookies dusted with sugar powder. Crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, a dessert not overly sweet. Three pieces went down easily even when already full.

Sky Avenue — There's More to See Outside the Park

Sky Avenue Mall is an area you can enter without a theme park ticket. There's a circular atrium with thousands of white spheres hanging from the ceiling, and in the center stands a golden horse sculpture with flame-shaped decorations. The red circle in front reads 駿馬騰雲. You can see the SkyCasino entrance at the back, and a large screen displays Arena of Stars performance promotions.

Looking closer, the screen displayed "KING OF SAXOPHONE" KENNY G 2026 WORLD TOUR in MALAYSIA performance information. The date was listed as July 12, 2026 at 6pm, with Arena of Stars as the venue. Genting is a place where such large-scale performances are constantly running, so if schedules align, you can fill a day with an amusement park in the daytime and a performance in the evening. However, this information changes by period, so you must check the official booking page before going.

The Return Journey — Stop Here Once

The return trip was unexpectedly pleasant. From the upper levels of the parking structure looking out, you can see the winding road descending around the mountainside. The apartment complex on the left ridge had its peak cut off by clouds. That's the curved road I drove up this morning.

During the descent, a reservoir appears where the view opens up. There's a patch of water nestled between layers of overlapping ridges, with a road flowing in an S-curve ahead of it. I recommend stopping here if you can secure a parking spot. Better than just a few photos, feel the temperature of the wind blowing at this altitude. It's a sensation you absolutely won't feel inside the park.

The last photo I took was of a large residential building standing on the ridge. It's a massive block-shaped building with a white wall and red band through it, with a communications relay tower on the adjacent hill. Below is an open-air parking lot filled with cars. It feels like this photo contains everything about Genting being an actual city where people sleep and stay before it's a tourist destination, so I kept it.

Notes for Next Visitors

• Always leave early. I departed from KL by car at 7am, and thanks to that, the cable car queue line was completely empty. Parking spaces remained at 300-490 per level.
• One light jacket. If you think of KL's heat and come in just a sleeveless shirt, you'll regret it the moment you exit the cable car.
• Don't see only the outdoor park and leave. There's a separate indoor theme park inside the building (Skytropolis). On rainy or cloudy days, this is actually the better option.
• Some rides may be stopped. I actually saw rides covered with cloth and not operating. If you have a target ride, check if it's running at the entrance first.
• Ticket prices, operating hours, and performance schedules are best verified on-site or through official channels. This article contains only what I directly saw, and I intentionally omitted numbers I wasn't certain about.

When I rolled down the car window after coming all the way down the mountain, humid hot air rushed in. The fact that just hours earlier I was watching roller coasters next to clouds suddenly felt surreal. Genting's real charm seems to lie not in the number of rides, but in the dramatic shift in climate zones accomplished in just one hour.
