Getting nails done in Phuket is usually spontaneous. You notice a sign on the way back from the beach, pop in, spend about 200 baht having your nails trimmed, and leave. But this place was different. Located on the 2nd floor of a shopping mall corridor heading toward Lagoon from Patong, there's Karahill Nail & Beauty. Below sits the Indian restaurant New Delhi Darbar, with the shop's yellow circular logo painted on the ground out front. At first, I thought it was a floor advertisement, but it turned out to be a sign saying "look up from here."

The staircase is the menu

The menu is posted on each step of the staircase going up. From bottom to top: FOOT & HAND SPA RITUAL, SIGNATURE HEAD SPA, LASH & WAXING STUDIO, PREMIUM MANICURE & PEDICURE, and at the very top, KARAHILL NAIL & BEAUTY. By the time you reach the top, you've already read everything the shop offers. On the right wall hangs a hygiene notice poster with very specific details. It states that consumables like nail files, buffers, and toe separators are single-use and discarded immediately, while metal tools like nippers and pushers go through a three-step sterilization process (deep cleaning → alcohol disinfection → UV sterilization).

Posting a notice on the wall is something anyone can do, so I took a look at the actual equipment inside. Below the color display shelves, on the storage unit, sit a sterilizer and towel warmer side by side, with towels folded on top. There's also a diffuser. After visiting several Southeast Asian nail shops, I've often seen places where tools just soak in a container—here, at least, the equipment is clearly being used and the sterilizer is actually on. WiFi password information is posted on the wall.

30 minutes spent at the color wall

The most time spent here wasn't on the service itself—it was choosing a color. An entire wall is lined with gel color shelves with interior lighting so you can see the true color of each bottle. Starting with apricot and flowing through red, yellow, green, blue, and purple, your eye goes straight to the shade you want. At the end of the shelves are clear gel boxes organized separately, and tiny silver and gold rabbit figurines sit in the corner of the top shelf.

The decision-making is helped by the color charts near the window bar table. Sample colors are painted on tips and displayed upright, while art designs are framed and hung separately. What looks good on screen is different on a nail tip. Especially with muted beige and gray tones, you have to see the actual color under the lighting to avoid regrets. Outside the window, yellow chandeliers line the shopping mall corridor, so while flipping through the tip charts, the backdrop was quite attractive.

Pedicure section and treatment room in the back

The pedicure stations are arranged on a wooden deck by the window in cream-colored recliners. The backrest reclines and white ceramic foot soaks sit underneath. Brown towels drape over the armrests, with a high wooden side table beside. A tall white floor lamp provides bright light, so you can see every detail under your nails without shadows during the pedicure. The only decoration is a wall clock.

The back area is divided by a curtain. Pull back the white curtain and you find a room with two beds lined up side by side, with gray skirting and white towels laid out, topped with folded bath towels. One wall features wooden louvers, with a wavy-edged mirror next to it with lighting around the frame. At the head of the beds is a wash basin with a yellow hose for the head spa service, so it's immediately clear how the SIGNATURE HEAD SPA mentioned on the staircase happens here. Two hourglasses on a shelf catch your eye.

The waiting area is well thought out

It's surprisingly rare to find a nail shop with a proper place for companions to wait while someone gets their service. Here, by the window, there's a white shell chair, and on a small round table sits a bamboo vase with just one leaf in it. This single-leaf vase best captures the character of the shop's interior design. Light reflects off the white tile floor, pedicure chairs visible in the back. While waiting in the AC, which is quite strong, I got goosebumps after about 20 minutes. Bring a thin jacket with you.

The entrance reception is just a white curved desk with a single laptop. Two rattan pendant lights hang low, warming the color temperature in this area. On the left wall, the same hygiene notice poster from the staircase hangs alongside a promotion poster with a QR code. Ceiling pipes are left exposed. The interior shows spending on design but isn't overdone.

The arched full-length mirror in front of the wooden louver wall is designed as a photo corner. White rugs spread on the floor with potted plants on either side. The mirror reflects the shopping corridor and glass door, so photos taken here capture both the shop and the outside scenery.

How to find it

If you only look at the address, you might get lost. Since the shop is on the 2nd floor of a mall, the storefront itself isn't visible from the road. The Indian restaurant New Delhi Darbar sign on the 1st floor and the yellow circular logo on the ground serve as actual landmarks. Once you spot the logo, just go up the stairs right next to it. After sunset, it looks completely different. Yellow chandeliers light up in rows along the mall corridor, with strands of bulbs connecting them, transforming the bland concrete alleyway into somewhere magical. The day I went, rain had just passed, leaving the ground wet so the lights reflected perfectly on the pavement. The view from the 2nd floor railing looking down at that scene is my favorite photo from the day.

The glass storefront has four circular photo icons for WAXING, NAIL, EYELASH, and HEAD SPA, with a metal WELCOME sign hanging on the pillar. A few outdoor tables and chairs are set out toward the corridor. The wide glass means everything inside is visible, which actually gives first-time visitors peace of mind. You can see from outside how many seats are available and how many people are currently being served.

Good to know before you go

• The shop isn't visible from the 1st floor street. Find the yellow circular logo on the ground and the New Delhi Darbar sign first.
• Prices and hours vary depending on when you visit. I didn't photograph the price list, so either check in person or call ahead.
• Choosing a gel color takes time. If you have a reservation, arrive 15 minutes early to view the tip charts first.
• The AC is strong. If your service runs long, your arms might get cold—bring a thin jacket.
• Head spa and waxing are done in the curtained room in back. With only two beds, expect a wait if it's busy.
• Evening is the best time for photos with the corridor lights on. Take a shot from the railing on your way out.

Phuket has nail shops everywhere, and you can find cheaper places if you only look at price. But shops that post how they manage their tools on the wall and actually have that equipment visible inside aren't common. Nails go wrong and follow you long after your trip ends. The attention to detail shown by posting one menu item on each of five staircase steps reveals itself equally in tool management. That's what sets this place apart.
