Saddle · Vinwonders Phu Quoc
We took our two children to VinWonders Phú Quốc at the north end of Vietnam's Phú Quốc island. I hadn't expected much from Southeast Asian theme parks after experiencing several, but this time was different. The moment we stood in front of the main gate, the children asked, "Is this Disney?" A yellow wall with pink spires and a castle gate structure adorned with gold trim. The real thing was much larger than in photos.

A Glass-Roofed European Street Immediately Upon Entry
After passing through the main gate, a European-style street covered with a glass ceiling appears. This design clearly shows someone who understands Phú Quốc's heat. Outside the temperature feels over 35 degrees Celsius, but this section blocks direct sunlight enough to make breathing easier. Vietnamese flag garlands hang in multiple layers across the ceiling. If you visit around September 2nd National Day, these decorations are even thicker.

At the center of the square beyond the street stands a large golden fountain sculpture. A feathered figure stands at the top with winged warriors and whale-like shapes layered beneath it. The water spray is weaker than expected. Around noon the granite floor around the fountain gets hot, and the soles of sandals burn. If you're photographing here, early morning or sunset is better.

The Real Destination: The Turtle-Shaped Aquarium
The centerpiece of our day was not the rides but the aquarium. The building marked Đền Hải Vương (Temple of the Sea King) on the signs. From a distance it just looks like a reddish rocky hill, but as you get closer the form becomes clear. A giant sea turtle with a shell, front flippers, eyes, and nostrils lies prostrate on the lawn. Water pours out of its mouth like a waterfall. My older child stared up at it silently for a while.

The interior flow is designed with an ancient ruins concept. Stone walls like Mayan temples have feathered decorations embedded in them, and the ceiling has orange ambient lighting. Coming in from sweating outside, the air conditioning feels quite strong. Bringing a thin light jacket is useful. While my wife took photos against the wall, my younger child kept running their hand over the wall patterns.

Timing the Feeding Schedule to Sit in Front of the Main Tank
The best part of the aquarium was the main viewing tank. One entire wall is glass, and when we arrived two divers were just entering to feed the fish. The moment they opened a bucket, a gray school of fish spiraled inward instantly. Below them a striped shark swept across the floor, and a ray slid close to the glass.

The feeding schedule is posted on a sign near the entrance, though it seems to change slightly each day. I'd recommend checking the time when you enter and planning your route accordingly. We were lucky to catch it, but a Korean family nearby said they'd missed it earlier and looked disappointed.
Beyond the tank section is a dark room with a deep sea exploration concept. A large diver sculpture illuminated in green light stands here, with a small tank inside the helmet's glass window. Runic-like symbols are carved into the walls. This is where the best photos of the kids are taken.

The Underwater Tunnel and Penguin House
The acrylic tunnel section is relatively short. Fish pass overhead and shark shadows are visible through the side glass. The floor catches the water's light, turning everything turquoise, so photos come out entirely blue. If you don't adjust white balance, faces photograph ghostly pale.

The penguin house is divided into outdoor and indoor sections. Outside, penguins line up at the water's edge beneath a light blue artificial ice cliff. Several individuals wear colored bands on their flippers. I was skeptical about penguins in the Phú Quốc midday heat, but they seem to be Humboldt penguins and manage well. Still, by noon most had congregated in the shaded areas.

Going down to the underground viewing window, you can watch penguins cut through the water from the side. They swim fast. By the time you press the shutter they're already out of frame. However, the glass condition was disappointing. There was significant algae and mineral buildup in places, making some sections murky. This area honestly feels less maintained.

A Break in the Middle for Ice Cream
Around 2 p.m. everyone was tired. We went into an indoor shop and ordered soft serve ice cream topped with chocolate sauce. It comes in a plastic cup and the portion isn't small. The sauce hardens, making it fun to break apart with a spoon. I didn't keep the receipt so I can't say the exact price. It's inside a theme park so expect to pay more than downtown. I'd recommend checking current prices on site.

Location and Transportation — Don't Forget It's at the North End of the Island
VinWonders Phú Quốc is located toward Gành Dầu at the north end of the island. From Duong Dong city it takes around 40 minutes by car. The roads are well developed and not congested, but when returning to the city in the evening, Grab pickups can be hard to find. It's safer to call ahead from within the park or arrange hotel pickup. The park grounds are so sprawling that there's a considerable walk between the aquarium and the amusement park areas. Without a stroller or cart, you'll end up carrying young children in the afternoon.
The Castle and Ferris Wheel at Sunset
In the center of the park is a large castle surrounded by a lake. During the day the spires reflect in the blue water, with the ferris wheel overlapping behind. This angle is the most photographed composition in the park.

The ferris wheel is visible from multiple points in the park. It rises above a red rocky formation and trees, with each gondola painted a different color. The angle looking up through the trees is surprisingly good.

As the sun sets, the castle's outer walls transform completely. During the day they're yellow and dull, but late afternoon brings orange tones to the brick while the pink roof and gold decorations come alive. The wind dies down so the lake becomes mirror-like, and reflections are perfectly captured. The crowds thin considerably. If you want to properly photograph the castle, this is the time to aim for.

What I Learned From the Visit
- When you enter, first check the aquarium feeding schedule and plan your route around it. It was the most memorable scene we saw that day.
- There's a big indoor-outdoor temperature difference. Bring one light layer.
- Bring plenty of water. The plaza and area in front of the turtle sculpture have almost no shade.
- Take castle photos late afternoon. During the day the light is too harsh and the walls wash out white.
- Arrange your ride back in advance. Pickup demand spikes in the evening.
The children have been talking about the turtle building for days. It was disappointing that the penguin glass was murky and the fountain spray was weak, but the 20 minutes sitting in front of the main tank was worth it.
